It is a type of two-piece saree or half-saree or Paavdaai and is composed of langa, tied in the waist through using a string as well as Dhavani, a see-through fine cloth that is usually 2 to 2.5 metres in length and draped diagonally over a choli and usually woven with cotton or silk. A slight variant of this one is Ghagra choli of North India, the difference between the both lies in the way of draping the pallu.
  • Langa Dhavani or half saree offers a smooth stitching from Paavdai as well as sattai, the traditional dress of little girls, to the complexity of draping a Sarees. Generally, the paavdai and oni are brightly colored as well as contrasting to one another and appears similar to saree. Similar to saree, oni is worn by wrapping it around the waist with one end draped over the shoulder baring the midriff.

  • However, the very influence of western culture has made several girls switch from this traditional outfit to modern attires. In recent years, Langa Dhavani is gaining recognition among girls due to media attention and due to the work of several designers who have in turn brought several new designs. Apart from being simple, Langa Dhavani depicts now potrays extravagant embroidery, mirror and zari work with bold colors such as black, grey etc that were once considered inauspicious. Not only this, the fabric has been changed from the usual silk or cotton to chiffon, georgette as well as other synthetic materials such as crepe or nylon.
  • Modern skirts are particularly made of light to mid- weight fabrics such as denim, jersey or poplin.
  • Langa Dhavani, once worn by the south Indian community, is now a popular wear and worn even in parties
