Plastic Bangles
Plastic bangles provide a modern spin on a traditional piece of Indian jewelry. Bangles are ornaments that are often worn by Indian women, especially by Hindu women. They are similar to bracelets, but unlike bracelets, bangles are sturdy rather than flexible. Traditionally, rather than plastic bangles, an Indian bride will try to wear as many glass bangles as she possibly can. The honeymoon ends when the last of the bangles breaks. In addition to plastic bangles, there are bangles made of gold, silver, platinum, iron, wood, and glass.
Bangles date back into the deep history of India. Bangles made of gold, copper, and bronze have been found at historical sites. There have even been bangles found that are made from shells. A small figurine of a girl who is dancing and wearing a bangle has been found dating all the way back to 2600 BC. Older bangles are very simple in appearance and design, consisting mainly of copper. By the time of the Mauryan Empire they began to take on a much more decorated and intricate appearance. Bangles are often covered in precious and semi-precious stones that make a jingling sound when the bangles are moved. Imitation jewelry is less likely to make this sound, or the sound is less noticeable.
Plastic Bangles are an inexpensive, fun way to decorate your body. While certainly a very modern invention, they represent a shift back to the simplicity of the bangles of ancient times. You can find them in all the different colors of the rainbow. You can also find ones that have patterns such as stripes, or even ones that have the appearance of delicate embroidery. They can be worn in pairs of one, two, or three per arm or more, and range from matte finish all the way up to glossy and shiny in appearance. They can be decorated with imitation jewelry which, while certainly not indistinguishable from the real thing upon close inspection, look very nice when they are made correctly.
Bangles are meant to be worn in pairs, with at least one on each arm, oftentimes more. Plastic bangles are beginning to replace glass ones, because plastic bangles are of a similar price but do not break as easily as glass ones do. Glass was once a precious material, but today plastic bangle are starting to make more sense as an option as the price of glass has gone down and outside of marriage traditions their fragility makes for a nuisance.
Plastic bangles, like all bangles, come in one of two basic types. There are bangles made of a single solid cylinder, and there are bangles made of a split springlike cylinder which is made so that it can open and close.
