- Pearls are gemstones produced when a tiny irritant body, whether accidentally or purposefully, gets inside the shell of a mollusk. The mollusk’s defense mechanism coats the irritant with layers of calcium carbonate, a crystal structure that forms iridescent layers around the foreign body. Layer by layer this precious jewel is formed until it no longer irritates the inside of the mollusk, and a beautiful pearl comes into being.
- Though this process may occur naturally in the wild, it is very rare. Pearls may also be cultured by human intervention, through a process of tissue implantation from a donor shell into a recipient. Though subtle, the tiny differences between a natural pearl and a cultured one can create large variance in the price and quality of pearl necklaces. Experts may use a gemological x-ray to examine the core of the pearl where growth rings and other telltale signs give away the pearl’s origin.
- Pearls come in many different shapes, all of which are used for different kinds of jewelry. The most valued is the perfectly round pearl, used most often in pearl necklaces and other strings of pearls. After that comes the semi-round variety, which may also be used in pearl necklaces but is usually disguised or arranged to appear perfectly round. Button, baroque, and teardrop shaped pearls may also be used as the centerpiece for certain types of pendant-based pearl necklaces.
- The size of the pearl is a great determining factor in its price—the larger the pearl, the more it will bring on the market, although anything under 7mm in width has a smaller variance in price.
- There are 6 different types of pearl necklaces classified by their length. Different lengths may be used with different clothing, and for different occasions. The choker necklace, from 16 to 18 inches, is commonly used with formal wear. The princess necklace, from 17 to 20 inches, is generally used with night wear. The matinee necklaces, from 20 to 24 inches, goes well with business wear, and the opera necklace, from 28 to 34 inches, is better for special occasions or parties. Finally, the rope necklace, anything 45 inches or larger, is best used for extravagant occasions, and with pant suits.
- Pearl necklaces are known as uniform when all the pearls are approximately the same size. These may be arranged in any way desired as they do not sport a center. Graduated pearl necklaces, however, are ones in which the pearls increase in size towards the center, sporting their largest pearl as the centerpiece. Care should be taken when these are worn that the largest pearl stays centered between the collarbones.
- In India, pearl necklaces are a favorite form of jewelry as they match well with the sari. Indian women wear the necklace close to their skin to accentuate its silken qualities, and draw attention to its smoothness. As there are different shades of color within pearls, it is important to match the color of the pearl to the color of one’s skin in order for the one to complement the other.
