  • Zardozi work tunics, or kurtis, are one of the most beautiful forms of artwork that has come from Persia and India, and it is one that can be worn. The word “zardozi” means “sewing with gold” and it refers to a special type of metal embroidery. Not only is the art lovely and eye-catching, but it is an ancient practice that dates back to the time of Rig Veda, approximately 1700–1100 BC. During the time of the Mughal Empire in India, around the 1700s, Zardozi work tunics were extremely popular amongst leaders and royalty. Later, when royal patronage declined, the demand for these beautiful women’s tops.or kurtis, also dropped.
  • The fashion experts of today are now confirming that the time of Zardozi work tunics has returned. In India, they are most popular in cities such as Chennai, Lucknow and Bhopal, but their popularity has crossed borders and the tunics are being worn all throughout the world, including in Europe and the Americas. Zardozi, imperial metal embroidery, has been used to decorate costumes of royalty and the wealthy for many years. It is also used in wall hangings, scabbards, furniture and even to decorate the dressings of horses and elephants. One can picture royalty coming down the streets of India, their elephants sparkling with the glitter of the Zardozi embroidery. It would be a fantastic sight.   • Zardozi embroiderers are the ultimate fashion artists. They used crochet hooks to stitch the metallic threads in a chain stitch kind of pattern. It all begins with a pattern or design drawn out on the fabric of the tunics. Most Zardozi work tunics are made with more elegant and rich fabrics, such as silk, satan or velvet. The fabric must be carefully and securely stretched over a wooden frame for support and then the embroiderer begins to stitch over the traced pattern. Later the fabric would be carefully washed to make sure no trace of the printed pattern could be seen.
  • While Zardozi work tunics were traditionally apparel for the rich and royal, today they have become popular amongst people of various cultures, backgrounds and classes. These women's tops are dazzling when worn to elegant evening occasions, such as weddings or other traditional ceremonies. The ground fabric can be a variety of colors, such as black, white, pinks, blues and more. They are available in sleeveless, short-sleeved or long-sleeved and can be long or short in length. One can even find Zardozi work tunics favoring gold, copper or silver threads, depending on the color of the fabric or occasion.
