  • Bandhani sarees are produced with tie-and-dye technique and are popular in several parts of India on account of its unique designs. The small resist-dyed spots do produce varied patterns over the fabric and is particularly created in the state of Gujarat.
  • It is believed that Bandhani sarees existed in India since the late fifteenth century AD as such work is quite evident in the fabrics that are displayed in the Ajanta murals. Several of today’s western Indian bandhej have ancestors back in Pakistan’s Sind and Punjab. However, majority of traditional bandhej does belong to either Khatri, Chippa, Punjabi Chavda, Rangrej or Neelgar communities. It is indeed a fact that approx nine varied social groups are involved with the production of traditional Bandhani textiles.
  • Bandhani sarees as well as odhnis were quite worn by women of majorly all religions, castes and tribes and were made of cotton, silk or even wool in particular of some ethnic odhnis. When compared with historical evidences, the very first Bandhani sarees was mainly worn during the time period of Bana Bhatt’s Harshacharita in a royal marriage. It was believed that wearing a bandhani saree can quietly bring good furute to the bride. Even Ajanta walls display the very evidence of existence of Bandhani sarees. In the recent times, the traditional Bandhani market has quietly shrunk on account of constant rise of low-cost silk-screened imitations. Several modern Bandhani sarees are quietly made with larger designs as well as fewer ties as compared to the past. However, even today, various different ethnic and tribal groups do wear odhnis with specific colors and designs and Bandhani sarees are quite traditionally worn by somewhat wealthier and more affluent women on several occasions.
  • Bandhani sarees are traditionally known sarees of West India and the majorly important manufacturing centres of such sarees are quietly located in Jamnagar, Bhuj and Ahmedabad. Apart from them, Jhunjunu, Sikar, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Jaipur are quite popularly known for creation of these exclusive sarees.
  • Some of the Bandhani sarees are created through contrasting two colors with borders, endpieces as well as one or more large central medallion known as ‘pomcha’ or padma’. Basically, red and black are in particular used for creation of a combination; however other pairs of colors are also found. For example- the Panetar saree is quite a Gujarati Hindu wedding saree made of satin-weave Gajji silk with red borders, central medallions as well as a white body. These kinds of sarees may contain regularly spaced red tie and dye spots.
