There is a long, mysterious history that goes along with Indian shoes. The significance of Indian costume footwear as well as the feet themselves are held in the highest regard. In fact, in India, feet are kept extremely clean just like ones hands. In the Indian culture, feet receive the utmost respect and are always treated kindly – which often includes massages, special lotions and treatments, and foot scrubs - in addition to the gentle daily practice of keeping the feet clean, moisturized, and healthy.
Due to the hot weather in India, shoes are not necessary on a daily basis, but Indian costume shoes are worn on special occasions such as for religious ceremonies or weddings. However, the exact reason for wearing Indian footwear varies between regions due to ethnic or religious differences. Since they are not necessary and do not absolutely have to be functional, Indian footwear is beautiful and delicate. You will not be able to run a marathon with Indian shoes for costumes, but you will definitely be able to show them off to admiring bystanders.
Indian costume footwear is typically extravagant and beautifully decorated with jewels, stones, tassels, embroidered designs, and other shiny materials. The intricate designs are nothing short of amazing and are an absolute pleasure to look at. And they don’t stop with the Indian costume shoes – they decorate and paint the skin on their feet to complement the costume shoes. One's toes may also be decorated with tassels, toe rings, and other jeweled embellishments. By the time they are finished dolling up their feet, they look quite beautiful indeed!
Toe-knob sandals known as padukas are a popular type of Indian costume footwear worn by Indian women. A type of strapped sandals referred to as chappals are traditional Indian costume shoes, too. Many traditional Indians also wear pointed shoes called juttis or tall boots called khapusas. There are many other types of Indian costume footwear besides the aforementioned types of Indian shoes, as styles vary widely by region.
Other popular styles besides Indian costume shoes are toe ring sandals, v-shape sandals, gladiators, platform heels, sandals with studded detail or beaded detail, Indian bridal footwear, wedge heels, back support, elastic strap sandals, buckled sandals, toe strap sandals, and stilettos for a bit of fun. The people of India wear many different types of shoes and there are plenty to choose from when shopping for Indian shoes.
Remember - you don’t have to be from India to enjoy the beauty and extravagance of Indian costume footwear or to make a statement with your feet. Indian footwear is being embraced and admired from all corners of the globe! It is true (with good reason) that Indian costume shoes are becoming a fashion statement in many places around the world, with the most popular areas being the United States, Australia, and the UK. It may not be long before you see Indian style shoes on the runways in Paris or Milan and in every fashion magazine!
