Learn how to wear a saree in Nivi Style
Basic Terms
Blouse : The Indian blouse called "choli" is the traditional attire and is usually worn with the saree or lehnga. It is essentially a low cut midriff baring blouse. It could either be sleeveless, half sleeves or full sleeves. The choli is cut to fit tight.
Petticoat : A petticoat or underskirt is an article of clothing for women; specifically an undergarment to be worn under a saree. The petticoat is a separate garment hanging from the waist. Saree petticoats usually match the color of the saree.
Pallu: The fanciest patterned end or loose end of the saree that falls on the outside so that the design can be seen.
Step by step instructions :
Method 1
- Wear a petticoat/underskirt tightly tied by a drawstring at the waist.
- A nicely fitted blouse/top is worn before draping the saree.
- Tuck the first & upper end of saree in the right hand side at the waistband of petticoat.
- Take the material/saree to the back & then finally taking it to the front by completing one round & tucking it at the waist hand in hand.
- Now, start making pleats of the palla & then again make a round with the palla parts & finally placing the palla at your left shoulder by throughing the fall of palla at back. Pin it up with a pin.
- Now, start making pleats (5-7 in counts) from left side & then tuck them inside the waistband of petticoat neatly without leaving any bulge.
- Put a pin on the pleats of front so that it is fixed up.
VARIATION-I
- If you want to show your heavy jewelry or neckpiece then you can go with this style of palla.
- Take the upper border part of saree & cover your bust horizontally from the border part & fix it tightly with a pin near left armhole.
- Now, start making pleats for the palla part leave the last layer or border.
- After making pleats, put it on the left shoulder by pinning it up with the blouse.
- In this way, the neck looks widen & clear . So, you can wear any jewelry & show that off easily.
VARIATION-II
- For formal evening parties, we can drape the palla in this style.
- Take the first or upper border part of palla part & pin it up at your left shoulder covering the bust area.
- Now, make proper pleats of the lower end of the palla part by adjusting them on the left hand in such a way that the saree falls in a plane way from shoulder till the waist or the folded left hand.
- Fix the adjustments with a pin on the left hand only & let the palla be opened falling to the backside as well as on the left hand.
