Learn how to wear a saree in Mundu Style
Basic Terms
Blouse : The Indian blouse called "choli" is the traditional attire and is usually worn with the saree or lehnga. It is essentially a low cut midriff baring blouse. It could either be sleeveless, half sleeves or full sleeves. The choli is cut to fit tight.
Petticoat : A petticoat or underskirt is an article of clothing for women; specifically an undergarment to be worn under a saree. The petticoat is a separate garment hanging from the waist. Saree petticoats usually match the color of the saree.
Pallu: The fanciest patterned end or loose end of the saree that falls on the outside so that the design can be seen.
Step by step instructions :
Methods
- Wear a petticoat/underskirt tightly tied by a drawstring at the waist.
- A nicely fitted blouse/top is worn before draping the saree.
- This is a two piece saree.
- Starting with the first part of the saree, tuck the first end & upper end of the saree/material in right hand side at the waist band of petticoat.
- Start making pleats of the palla side & then place it on your right shoulder throwing the fall in front & keeping the length little below the knee.
- Now, make a round of the saree by taking it to the front moving from back from left hand side.
- Now, we take the entire material from back bringing it to the front & pin it up tightly at right hand side along with saree & petticoat just beneath the palla.
- Start making pleats with the entire left over of the saree. Then, tuck it at the centre front properly.
- Take the second part of the saree i.e. called pallu part & pin up the corner just 2” below the navel where pleats is been already tucked up.
- Now, take it to the back & start making pleats neatly. Make narrow pleats according to the border of the saree & through them on the left shoulder by making the end of the palla falling at back.
- While placing the palla, keep the saree parts tight around your waist covering the bust area properly. Fix the palla at your left shoulder with a pin.
VARIATION 1
- Make proper pleats & put the palla part on your right shoulder in such a way that the length of the palla at the front is below knee. Fix it up at the shoulder by pinning it up with the blouse.
- Hold the other end of palla & drag the last layer of the pleated palla to the back side & finally completely one round covering the bust area & fixing it up at the centre front just beneath the palla.
- Now, hold the corner of the border/palla part lifting it up & placing at left shoulder making a V.
VARIATION-II
- Making the pleats of the palla piece of the saree.
- Now place that at your neck just like a neckpiece dividing it equally for the fall at back.
- Hold the border from right side & drag it to the left side covering the bust in front.
- Now, fix it up with pins at both the sides (left & right) near armhole from inside, so that it doesn’t fall off.
