Various ways of draping a dupatta (with lehenga choli)

Basic Terms

The Indian blouse called "choli" is the traditional attire and is usually worn with the saree or lehnga. It is essentially a low cut midriff baring blouse. It could either be sleeveless, half sleeves or full sleeves. The choli is cut to fit tight.

Petticoat : A petticoat or underskirt is an article of clothing for women; specifically an undergarment to be worn under a saree. The petticoat is a separate garment hanging from the waist. Saree petticoats usually match the color of the saree.

Pallu: The fanciest patterned end or loose end of the saree that falls on the outside so that the design can be seen.

Step by step instructions :

Methods

  • Wear a petticoat or underskirt tied tightly by a drawstring at the waist.
  • A tight fitted blouse/top needs to be worn before draping a sari.
  • Now, tuck the first & upper end of the sari in the right hand side at the waistband of petticoat.
  • Bring the entire material/sari to right handside moving it from front to back making a round of sari around the waist & tucking them properly & neatly at the waist.
  • Now, tuck the saree at the centre front for the support of palla.
  • Drag the rest of the saree/material from the front to the back & then start making pleats of the palla part of sari.
  • Put the pleated palla on the right shoulder coming from back & falling to the front side keeping the length of palla till knee or as per the pattern of sari. Finally, fix up the palla with a pin on the shoulder.
  • Now leaving some part of the sari at the back for falling & drape for ease, start making box pleats at the centre front (Box pleats are the pleats which falls on both the sides)
  • Now, tuck the pleats properly & neatly at the centre front without any bulges. Fix the pleats with a pin at centre front only.
  • Finally, cover the bust area by putting the last layer of the pleats of the palla to the back side & fix it up with a pin somewhere at the back of blouse tightly.

  • The length of this is just going to be just above knee.
  • Now, drag the dupatta from front to the left side taking it to the back side covering the bust area finally pinning it at back.
  • This drape is done usualy on the wedding day for a bride.
