Pashmina Jamavar is still in vogue amongst the rich, bold and beautiful women of America, Britain and Europe. Clothes made of Jamavar fabric look exquisite and unique. They offer finest paisley designs with complex large motifs and orient designing coming straight from the weavers of Kashmir.
  • Not only the glory but also the colors of nature that have been captured skillfully on cloth does characterize the famous Jamavars of Kashmir. Jama refers to robe and war refers to yard. Kings and nobles used to purchase the woven fabric by the yard and then wearing it as a gown or even using it as a wrap or shawl.
  • The very base of Jamavar was more often wool with addition to little cotton. The brocaded patterns were woven either in silk or pashmina with most of the designs being floral.

  • The very art of weaving a Jamavar fabric is quite painstaking and complex one. Various kannis and little wooden shuttles of varied colors were used for a single weft line of the fabric. Nearly fifty colors can be worked into one shawl with most colors being yellow, white, black, green, purple and scarlet, to name a few. Months of hardwork is gone into the preparation for each Jamavar and not an inch being added per day within a 48 inch width of material.
  • Stating its history, the very art of Jamawar weaving did grew and flourished, reaching its top position during the Mughal period. During that time, emperor Akbar used to be one of the greatest patrons. He brought in several weavers from East Turkestan to Kashmir.
  • The opening of 19th century saw a major innovation in the weaving of Jamawar. Embroidery used to enhance and embellish the woven design. But, at the end of century, the art began to wane. The industrialization and urbanization has reduced this beautiful art to a halt.
  • However, recently, the Indian government has attempted a modest revival of this art via setting up various fabric weaving centers in Kashmir.
