  • Kasuti embroidery is a traditional form of art that is practiced in North Kanara district of Karnataka. Talking about its origin, Kasuti embroidery can be dropped to the period of Chaulakyas when a great renaissance in the sphere of art and architecture came to a destination. The very fact of this age old embroidery form is it can be performed by counting the threads of the weft and warp. Moreover, the designs can be easily traced or implanted as outlines. In a conventional manner, it is quietly done on ikai sarees as well as blouse pieces.
  • Kasuti embroidery is quite a fine piece of art. Kasuti displays the best on thick materials against dark Indian shades. The quite larger designs do showcase the elephant with howdah, the temple, the basil plant platform, Nandi the sacred bull etc all near the pallu. Going down the length, the designs get smaller like flowers , birds, animals and large variety of geometric designs. Care must be taken that stitches in Kasuti embroidery must be vertical, horizontal or diagonal as well as the lines or the motifs need to be completed on the return journey filling in the blank portions.
  • Kasuti work includes embroidering very complex patterns like gopura, chariot, palanquin, lamps and conch shells. Some locally available materials are also used for embroidery. The pattern that has to be embroidered is marked with charcoal or pencil and after that proper needles and thread are chosen. The work is quite back-breaking and includes counting of every thread on the cloth. The very patterns are stitched without making use of knots for ensuring both sides of the cloth look alike.
  • Some of the major types of Kasuti embroidery range from Neyge Kasuti, Murgi Kasuti, Menthya Kasuti and Gavanthi Kasuti. Gavanthi is far majorly used double running stitch and is worked in horizontal and vertical directions. Murgi is the zigzag performed with the mending stitch that is quite similar to gavanthi. Negi represents ordinary running stitch used in large designs thereby creating a woven design effect. An interesting fact is that negi is an off-shoot of the word ‘ney’ which in Karnataka means weaving. Menthya represents a cross-stitch performed closely by counting of the warp and two weft threads in particular used in architectural patterns.
  • Kasuti work has quietly grown beyond its traditional boundaries as it is being used in several other dress materials such as Mysore silk saree.
  • Lay your hands upon the best at affordable rates from Utsav.
